Serenity Prayer

Today, I’m feeling overwhelmed at all there is to do.  So I thought I do myself a favor … and maybe bless you at the same time – in case you’re feeling the same feelings as I am.  I thought I’d share my favorite prayer in times like these.  The Serenity Prayer.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.


Amen. I usually pray that prayer as many times as it takes to transition from worry to actual prayer.  Then I try to accomplish one small thing within my control.

 

May God strengthen you for these next few baby steps of the journey!

40 Days of Electronic Giving

The Finance and Outreach Committees are challenging you to try electronic giving from August 15-September 23.  As an incentive, all gifts will go further with a 50% match.  So Every $20 gift receives a $10 match.  Up to $2000 of matching dollars is available, so if we can receive $4000 in gifts, we will make a $6000 impact.  50% of the gifts will benefit Immanuel’s General Fund.  50% will be divided between the following ministry partners: Womenade, Relay for Life, Young Adults in Global Mission Scholarship Fund, and Community Outreach.  To get started, visit: https://www.wadenaimmanuel.org/giving

 

Parking Lot Service September 20 at 10 am

Join us for worship in Immanuel’s Parking on on Sunday, September 20 at 10am (NOTE TIME CHANGE FROM EARLIER SERVICES).  We’ll share music, listen to God’s Word, and celebrate Holy Communion.  You can worship in your car or bring a lawn chair and sit outside in a designated area (don’t forget to social distance!).  We plan to offer these parking lot services every 3 weeks through November 1.  Join us!

Sanctuary Worship Resumes September 13!

We’re going to cautiously resume worship in our sanctuary.  Here’s the plan.  Beginning September 13, we’ll start a 4-week cycle of worship services at 8:30am (September 13, 20, 27, and October 4).  We’re asking people to pre-register for ONE of these four services, so we can be sure we have adequate space for those who want to attend.  All participants will be required to wear a mask; services will be 30-40 minutes in length; and there will be no congregational singing.  All will include Holy Communion using only bread.  If you would like more details of our safety plan, please contact Pastor Nate. Need Masks?

As our life gradually begins to open up, wearing a mask while out in public is a great way to serve your neighbor.  Pam Nelson has put some masks she’s sewn up at church in both adult and youth sizes.  Stop by the church (the building is open 8:30am-7pm) and pick up what you need.  Thanks, Pam!

A Treasure Greater Than Heaven and Earth!

Last week, we started this journey through the catechisms’ (Large and Small) thoughts on baptism.   And we remembered that baptism might seem like a human act – but is really God’s action. Today, we forge ahead with more.   After hearing such wonderful news about God’s action in baptism, about the benefits we receive, including forgiveness and the promise of everlasting life, our next thought might be that of skepticism.   So the Small Catechism leads us to ask, “How can water do such great things?”   The answer: “It is not the water that does these things, but God’s Word with the water and our trust in this Word.   Water by itself is only water, but with the Word of God it is a life-giving water which by grace gives the new birth through the Holy Spirit.” In the Large Catechism, Luther says even more on this topic: “Yes, my friend! Forgive ... Forgiven

Today, we finish our brief series on forgiveness from the Large Catechism.   And our focus today is the practical application of forgiveness. There are two important parts of forgiveness.   One is the forgiveness we receive from God.   The other is the forgiveness we receive from our neighbors.   And both are essential to our faith and life in the community.   When people come to me with a guilty conscience, I ask them if they would like a word of absolution.   Sometimes, though, I can see that before they are forgiven by God, they need to seek forgiveness from their spouse, child, parent, neighbor, or friend.   Other times, they have been forgiven by the person they’ve wronged, but they cannot forgive themselves.   Other times, still, they have offered the sincerest apology they can and have not been forgiven.   And a strong word of forgiveness from God is needed – and we pray that the one they have wronged will forgive them in time. Who is Worthy to Receive Communion?!!

Today is our third week on the Lord’s Supper/Communion.   So far, we have discovered that this is God’s meal, not the result of human actions or work.   Also, we discussed last week the importance of our faith that the bread and wine actually become Christ’s body and blood. Today, we focus on the question of who is worthy to receive the gifts of communion.   This is a topic of special interest to Luther.   He is especially interested in the idea that one could be too sinful to receive this gift.   For Luther, it is easy to look at your sins and shortcomings and decide you are not worthy to receive such a gift.   God’s goodness contrasts so sharply with our sinfulness, “then because of this, such people will not go to the sacrament and wait until they are prepared, until one week passes into another and one half-year into yet another.   If you choose to fix your eye on how good and pure you are, to wait until nothing torments you, you will never go” (...
