God's Name
We’re continuing our journey through the 10 commandments. Don’t forget, God promises to be our God and provide for all our needs regardless of how well we keep these commands. But we teach them because they provide healthy boundaries for life – for ourselves and our neighbors.
Today, we focus on the 2nd commandment.
I want you to think about the things that are essential to your life that you can easily take for granted? For me, it’s things like food, clothing, a supportive family, an orderly society, and my health. What’s on your list? Spend a few moments thinking about such things.
Then think about the gift of our relationship with God. We can easily take that relationship for granted, too, including the gift of God’s name. And some of the symptoms that we might be taking the gift of God’s name for granted can be found in our vain or shallow use of God’s name. Using God’s name superstitiously (as a good luck charm, for example), or using God’s name to curse, lie, or to bolster our own credibility (“I swear to God that I’m telling the truth!”).
God know that when we use His name for such shallow purposes, God’s name is cheapened in our lives. So God places a boundary around His name, calling us to forgot such vain use of His name and instead, focus our attention on using the name of God for prayer, praise and thanksgiving. How might you enter into the gift of God’s name today?
Keeping God’s name Holy is about deepening our relationship with God. And remember. When that relationship is healthy and robust, our other relationships are improved, too.
Grace and peace, dear friends in Christ. May you be strengthened to fear and love God so that you move away from the vain use of God’s name and instead call on Him in prayer, praise and thanksgiving!
