Palm Sunday Prayer

Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus

We continue in these 40 days of Lent.  And as we do, God calls us to resist sin, both personal and corporate.  We also prepare for Palm Sunday and Holy Week, where we will once again hear the story of God saving us from sin and death through the blood of His Son, Jesus.

The “Blessing of Palms” prayer from the ELW visits many of these themes:

We praise you, O God,
For redeeming the world through our Savior Jesus Christ.
Today he entered the holy city in triumph
And was proclaimed a messiah and king
By those who spread garments and branches along his way.
Bless these branches and those who carry them.
Grant us grace to follow our Lord in the way of the cross,
So that, joined to his death and resurrection,
We enter into life with you;
Through the same Jesus Christ,
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and forever.
Amen

On Sunday, everyone who worships with us in person and those who come for our grab and go youth lunch will receive a palm and a card with this prayer.  We will encourage people to take these palms home and place them in a prominent place.  When the palms have dried out, we hope people will eventually return them to Immanuel, so they can be burned for next year’s Ash Wednesday services, when we will once again remember that we are dust.

May God strengthen you as Holy Week approaches.  Be blessed.  And be a blessing to God’s world.

·         Good Friday (April 2) ~ 6:30pm – Facebook only
·         Easter Sunday (April 4) ~ 8:30am & 10am – In person worship (8:30am on Facebook)
·         Radio Broadcast continues each Sunday 9:30am on KWAD (though starting April 4, we will be broadcasting our 8:30 service instead of pre-recording)

Last week, we started this journey through the catechisms’ (Large and Small) thoughts on baptism.   And we remembered that baptism might seem like a human act – but is really God’s action. Forgive ... Forgiven

Today, we finish our brief series on forgiveness from the Large Catechism.   And our focus today is the practical application of forgiveness. There are two important parts of forgiveness.   One is the forgiveness we receive from God.   The other is the forgiveness we receive from our neighbors.   And both are essential to our faith and life in the community.   When people come to me with a guilty conscience, I ask them if they would like a word of absolution.   Sometimes, though, I can see that before they are forgiven by God, they need to seek forgiveness from their spouse, child, parent, neighbor, or friend.   Other times, they have been forgiven by the person they’ve wronged, but they cannot forgive themselves.   Other times, still, they have offered the sincerest apology they can and have not been forgiven.   And a strong word of forgiveness from God is needed – and we pray that the one they have wronged will forgive them in time. Who is Worthy to Receive Communion?!!

Today is our third week on the Lord’s Supper/Communion.   So far, we have discovered that this is God’s meal, not the result of human actions or work.   Also, we discussed last week the importance of our faith that the bread and wine actually become Christ’s body and blood. Today, we focus on the question of who is worthy to receive the gifts of communion.   This is a topic of special interest to Luther.   He is especially interested in the idea that one could be too sinful to receive this gift.   For Luther, it is easy to look at your sins and shortcomings and decide you are not worthy to receive such a gift.   God’s goodness contrasts so sharply with our sinfulness, “then because of this, such people will not go to the sacrament and wait until they are prepared, until one week passes into another and one half-year into yet another.   If you choose to fix your eye on how good and pure you are, to wait until nothing torments you, you will never go” (...
